NHS dental care vs private dental treatment abroad

What NHS dentistry covers for UK patients, what usually remains private, and why veneers, implants and smile makeovers are normally compared against UK private prices.

NHS dentistry is designed to secure oral health, not provide elective cosmetic treatment. In England, Band 3 treatment is GBP 332.10 from 1 April 2026 and can include clinically necessary crowns, dentures and bridges, but veneers, full smile makeovers and many implant-led plans are usually private decisions.

NHS care has a different purpose

NHS dentistry exists to keep your mouth healthy. It is not a cosmetic dentistry programme.

That distinction matters for UK patients comparing Vietnam with local options. A low NHS charge does not mean you can get a private-style smile makeover, Emax veneer case or branded implant plan at that price.

England NHS charge context

From 1 April 2026, NHSBSA lists England dental charges as:

BandChargeTypical scope
Band 1GBP 27.90Exam, diagnosis, advice, X-rays if clinically needed
Band 2GBP 76.60Band 1 plus fillings, root canal work or extractions
Band 3GBP 332.10Band 1 and 2 plus crowns, dentures and bridges where clinically needed

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have different charging rules. Check the local NHS source that applies to your home country.

What usually stays private

  • Cosmetic veneers and smile design
  • Tooth whitening for appearance
  • Non-essential material upgrades
  • Most adult orthodontics for appearance
  • Most single-tooth implants and full-arch implant plans

How to compare fairly

Compare NHS care with NHS care, and private care with private care. If you need a clinically necessary crown available through an NHS dentist, that may be the right route. If you want 10 Emax veneers, a full smile makeover or branded implant treatment, compare private UK quotes with Picasso’s itemised GBP plan.
